(From a Local Who’s Lived Here for Over 20 Years)
I’ve lived in North Texas for more than two decades, and during that time I’ve watched this region grow, evolve, and attract families from all over the country. I’ve also helped those families put down roots here by buying their first home, moving up as their family grows, or relocating for work and lifestyle.
There’s a reason so many people are choosing North Texas. Here are 11 of the biggest ones I see every day.
1. A Lower Cost of Living Without Sacrificing Quality
North Texas offers a strong quality of life without the price tag you’ll find in many coastal cities. Texas has no state income tax, and many North Texas communities still offer relatively affordable housing in well planned neighborhoods. Everyday expenses like food, gas, and transportation also tend to run lower than the national average, which makes a real difference for families.
2. Safe, Family Focused Communities
One of the first things relocating families ask me about is safety. Many North Texas suburbs consistently report crime rates below the national average and are designed with families in mind. Quiet streets, sidewalks, parks, and neighborhood events are common. It’s not unusual to see kids riding bikes or neighbors actually knowing each other.
3. Cities That Are Planning for the Long Term
Cities across the region, including Dallas and Fort Worth, have made long term investments in sustainability and infrastructure. From water conservation to green spaces and thoughtful development, North Texas communities are planning for growth in a way that supports families now and in the future.
4. Strong School Districts
Education is a major draw for families moving here. North Texas is home to several highly rated school districts, including Frisco Independent School District, Plano Independent School District, and Lovejoy Independent School District. Families often appreciate the balance of strong academics, extracurricular activities, and community involvement.
5. Close to Colleges and Universities
Higher education is another strength of the region. Institutions like University of Texas at Dallas, Texas A&M University–Commerce, and Collin College add cultural, educational, and economic depth to the area. Having colleges nearby often brings innovation, diversity, and opportunity to surrounding communities.
6. Year Round Family Fun
There’s always something to do in North Texas. From live music venues like the House of Blues and Toyota Music Factory to outdoor destinations like the Fort Worth Zoo and the Dallas Arboretum, families can stay busy throughout the year. Many suburbs also offer town centers with restaurants, shopping, and events designed specifically for families.
7. Sports Are Part of the Culture
Sports are woven into everyday life here. Families can cheer on professional teams like the Dallas Cowboys, Dallas Mavericks, Dallas Stars, and Texas Rangers. Just as important, youth sports are everywhere including soccer, baseball, football, golf, tennis, and even equestrian programs rooted in Texas tradition.
8. A Thriving Arts Scene
North Texas isn’t just about sports and business. The arts are alive and well. Dallas’s Arts District includes world class museums, an opera house, and a symphony hall. For younger performers, organizations like North Texas Performing Arts offer classes, camps, and productions that help kids build confidence and creativity.
9. Weather That Supports an Active Lifestyle
North Texas enjoys plenty of sunshine and generally mild winters. Summers are warm, springs and falls are comfortable, and while the region does experience the occasional storm or winter ice event, most families find the climate ideal for outdoor activities, sports, and community events.
10. The Best of City Life and Open Space
One of the things many families love about North Texas is the variety. You can live close to a major city or choose a suburb with larger lots, greenbelts, and a more relaxed pace. Towns like Fairview offer rolling hills, parks, and open space while still being close to shopping and dining.
11. A Central Location That Makes Travel Easy
North Texas is a major transportation hub, making travel simple whether it’s for work or visiting family. With access to highways, rail, and major airports, it’s easy to reach the East Coast, West Coast, or Midwest without hassle.
Why Families Ultimately Stay
After living here for over 20 years, what stands out most is the sense of opportunity. North Texas offers affordability, strong schools, career growth, and communities where families can truly settle in and build a future. It’s not just a place to move. It’s a place to grow.
