Published , 3 minute read

Having lived in McKinney for over 20 years, one of the things I appreciate most about this city is how intentional it is about building community. No matter the season, there is always something happening that brings neighbors together, supports local businesses, and showcases what makes McKinney special. If you are new to the area or thinking about calling McKinney home, these annual events give you a great feel for the heartbeat of the city.

Below is a breakdown of McKinney’s major festivals and events throughout the year, along with when they typically take place.

Bridal Show

When: January

The McKinney Bridal Show usually takes place on the second weekend in January and kicks off the year with energy and excitement. It brings together local wedding vendors and couples planning their big day, and it is a great example of how McKinney supports small businesses and local talent.

Krewe of Barkus Dog Parade

When: February

Held the Sunday before Mardi Gras, Krewe of Barkus is one of the most lighthearted and uniquely McKinney events of the year. Dogs and their owners dress up and parade through downtown, competing for fun awards while raising money for local causes. It is a crowd favorite for families and pet lovers.

Arts in Bloom

When: April

Arts in Bloom typically takes place the second weekend in April and is one of the most popular spring events in the city. Downtown McKinney turns into an outdoor art gallery featuring more than 100 artists, live music, food vendors, and wine tasting. This event really highlights McKinney’s creative and cultural side.

Texas Music Revolution

Texas Music Revolution is usually held during the first full weekend in June. It brings dozens of live music performances to multiple stages around Historic Downtown McKinney. This two day festival has become a staple for music fans across North Texas and gives the city a lively summer kickoff.

Red, White and Boom

When: July

McKinney’s Fourth of July celebration includes a parade, live entertainment, food vendors, and a fireworks show. Red, White and Boom is a long standing tradition that reflects the strong sense of pride and community in the city. It is one of the largest annual events McKinney hosts.

Oktoberfest

When: Late September

Oktoberfest typically takes place the last weekend in September and is one of the most anticipated fall events in McKinney. The festival features German food, music, local beer, games, and competitions. Downtown is packed all weekend, and it is a great example of how McKinney blends tradition with fun.

Trick or Treat Trail

When: October

As fall settles in, McKinney hosts family friendly Halloween events like the Trick or Treat Trail, usually held at Towne Lake Park. This event provides a safe and festive environment for kids to enjoy Halloween activities while bringing families together outdoors.

McKinney Wine and Music Festival

When: October

Typically held in mid October, the McKinney Wine and Music Festival combines live music with wine tastings from around the world. Hosted at District 121, it is a popular event for adults looking to enjoy good food, drinks, and a relaxed community atmosphere.

Home for the Holidays, A McKinney Christmas

When: Thanksgiving Weekend

The holiday season officially begins in McKinney the weekend after Thanksgiving. Home for the Holidays includes festive lights, performances, and family activities throughout downtown. It sets the tone for the Christmas season and brings a lot of charm to the city.

Holiday Tour of Homes and Parade of Lights

When: December

December wraps up the year with the Holiday Tour of Homes and the McKinney Parade of Lights. These events showcase beautifully decorated historic homes and festive parade floats, drawing families and visitors downtown to celebrate the season together.

More Events Throughout the Year

In addition to the major festivals, McKinney hosts art shows, farmers markets, cultural celebrations, concerts, and community events year round. These smaller gatherings are part of what makes McKinney feel like a true hometown rather than just another suburb.

Why This Matters

For anyone considering moving to McKinney, these events say a lot about the city itself. They reflect a strong sense of community, local pride, and intentional growth. After living here for two decades, this year-round calendar of festivals is one of the biggest reasons McKinney continues to feel like a true hometown rather than just another suburb.
